Thursday Flash Fiction: Night Out (In)

Photo by Drew Coffman on Unsplash

Full war paint,

Dark red lipstick,

Perfectly smoothed hair,

Mile-high heels,

Tummy sucked in,

Skirt straight,

Shoulders back,

No slouching

because the masses don’t care if you’re tired.

Polished nails,

Gold jewelry,

So what do you do?

Where are you from?

Must be ready

with prepackaged answers.

I’m so witty, ha ha ha!

All that’s no match for

Sweatpants

With pockets!

Thick socks,

A fresh face,

Hair pulled back in a mess,

Feet up on the furniture,

Back sinking into the cushions,

Coffee with a book,

SILENCE.

Dog at your feet,

Relaxed frown,

Not being forced to smile (my face hurts!)

Getting a snack whenever you want,

With no one watching, judging,

SILENCE.

No questions being darted your way,

No pressure to engage.

The quiet night an old friend,

And did I mention,

SILENCE.
