Writing Tip Wednesday: How to know if self-publishing services are legit

As we’ve talked about previously on this blog, the self-publishing boom has led to the appearance of a TON of companies and individuals who are selling services to self-published authors.

Most of these services are related to book promotion. More recently, I have been receiving a ton of unsolicited emails from groups purporting to help me start and monetize paid courses related to my nonfiction books. It’s tough to know whether these services are legit. I’ve been burned in the past when I paid for services that I did not receive. In those cases, it’s usually not worth your time and effort trying to get your money back, especially if we’re talking about a $25 book promotion or something similar.

However, the waste is still extremely frustrating. Not only are you out the money and your time and energy, but you’ve missed a promotional opportunity that you could have used.

How do you know if services are legit?

Well, I have two recommendations for you in that regard. The first is author David Gaughran’s Bewares section on his blog. You can search the Bewares section if you’re looking for information on a particular outfit. It’s also a good idea to scan it periodically so that you’re in the know and don’t end up being taken advantage of.

Another resources is Writer Beware, a well-recognized and respected group that provides information and alerts for writers. Writer Beware was founded by Science Fiction Writers of America, but provides information for writers of all genres. Writer Beware also provides an excellent list of resources for self-published authors, including warnings about unscrupulous service providers.

You can also consult the Alliance of Independent Authors, a non-profit professional association for self-published authors.

The further along you get in your self-publishing journey, the more you’ll be able to narrow down the market and focus on those providers who offer truly valuable services.

I hope that this has been helpful! Happy Writing!
